    "Kids living in poor families are more likely to have physical, emotional problems," she said. "They are the kids more likely to have babies early or to have trouble with the law or not graduate from high school. It doesn't mean they will have these problems; it just means they have a higher possibility of having those problems."

    Goldberg said 39 percent of Maine families with children -- newborn to age 18 -- make less than $40,000.

    She said 11,000 children in such families have no health insurance coverage, even though MaineCare -- Maine's version of Medicaid -- probably would available for most.

    47 million Americans lack health insurance:

    The number of Americans lacking health insurance rose by nearly 8.6 million to 47 million from 2000 to 2006, with children and workers from every income level losing coverage, a new report said on Thursday.


    The increase was "driven primarily by the continued erosion in employer-provided health insurance," said the report by the Washington, D.C.-based Economic Policy Institute.
