Turkey has 140,000 troops on Iraq border: Iraq

    [...]

Turkey's armed forces have urged its government to allow an incursion into neighboring, mainly Kurdish, northern Iraq to crush up to 4,000 Turkish Kurdish militants who use the region as a base to attack security and civilian targets inside Turkey.

Rumors of a possible Turkish incursion have rattled financial markets and have drawn warnings from the United States, Ankara's NATO ally, to stay out of Iraq.

Larijani: US claim on missile shield project 'joke of the year'

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani said Sunday the US claim that their missile shield project in Europe is intended to safeguard Europe against Iranian missiles should be called the "Joke of the year" since Iranian missiles cannot reach Europe.

Speaking to IRNA, Larijani said, "Nowadays, Americans tell jokes like this very often."

US Plan for "Missile Shield" in Eastern Europe is Criticized by China

At a weekly press briefing, Jiang Yu, spokeswoman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said the shield would upset a delicate balance of security among major powers.

"The Chinese side has always held that missile defense impacts the strategic balance and stability," said Jiang. "It is not conducive to mutual trust between major powers and also regional security. It can also bring new proliferation problems."

China sides with Russia, another vocal opponent of the proposed missile defense system, in demanding the U.S. scrap the plan. U.S. officials say the shield is not offensive and would only be used to defend against attacks from nations such as Iran and North Korea.
