U.S. Government Commissioned Spanish-Language Star-Spangled Banner in 1919

But in 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Education commissioned a Spanish-language version of The Star Spangled Banner. The State Department's website also features four-separate versions of the anthem in Spanish.

It appears xenophobia isn't part of the American tradition.

I got to hear the Spanish version on a Democracy Now broadcast. It was gorgeous. It moved me to tears. I haven't felt anything like that listening to it in English since I developed political consciousness as a 12 year old (thanks to a subversive uncle who gave me a copy of 1984 that year).
