US military operations are geared to intimidate progressive governments
ACN Havana: Former Venezuelan deputy Foreign Minister William Izarra has told TeleSur that US military operations in the Caribbean are geared to intimidate the progressive governments of the region.
The exercises, involving 6,500 marines, are being widely condemned by groups in Venezuela who are calling for protests against the presence of the US militaries in the area, reported the Granma newspaper.
"I believe that these maneuvers are to terrify, in a demonstration of force, and to create fear in the progressive Latin American governments," said Izarra.
He quoted General Bantz J. Craddock, head of the US Southern Command, who has expressed his rejection of the Venezuelan government on several occasions, as saying that Washington should not tolerate the government of President Hugo Chavez.
US military maneuvers in the Caribbean include the George Washington Aircraft Carrier, used to transports tactical nuclear weapons.
