High gas prices and changing tastes have turned consumers off SUVs, the once-hot emblems of rugged American individualism.
Mass produced, gas guzzling vehicles as a symbol of rugged individualism go a long way toward explaining precisely how a chimpy dumb ass like Bush got a seat in the oval office. You have to consider anyone stupid enough to accept a mass produced vehicle as a symbol of individualism also stupid enough to think Bush can lead a nation, and anyone oblivious enough to think a car that gets 8 miles a gallon - or even 18 - a selfish, stupid right wing pig with a thick sense of entitlement.
Jimmy Carter explained to the public in 1977 that conservation was a central part of energy independence and we needed to pursue energy independence through conservation beginning right then.
The nation responded by conserving but certain republicans deeply resented being asked to do this. They insisted the world belonged to them and they could use as much of it as they saw fit, even if it cost lives or destroyed the environment.
So in 1980 Bush Sr. (Chimpy's father) and his friends committed high treason against American hostages in Iran, broke arms laws and fixed the election, ultimately installing Reagan in the oval office.
This is similar to the installation of W since both were chosen for their weak minds and both were - are - run by a creepy cabal of corporatist thugs, like Rumsfeld and Cheney who also "served" under Reagan.
Conservation was forgotten as corporatism took completely over. America died and Amerikkka was born.
The republican party, with its emphasis on greed , shallowness and self service, has lead America to a place where sending people to die so idiots can drive mammoth metal hunks of junk like Tahoes and Excursions and Suburbans which, along with their ESPN, will keep them content while the corporatists plunder the economies of countries like Iraq and slowly extinguish their own rights and the economic features of middle class life,
seems perfectly fine.
