Today's Rank and File Conservatives

Conservatives have unusually narrow, rigid notions of gender that cause them to "conserviate".

They don't feel quite up to their own notion of male and female AND it scares and depresses them.
This may be part of why they whine and become obsessed with the sex lives of other people. They're afraid they might do some of what they assume others are doing and lose entitlement to their gender role. Then where would they be?

All those hierarchic, authoritarian, elitist, fuck you policies the conservative party issues, all those rigid rules for being may make them feel safer because it may make it seem like there are clear rules for being a woman or man, and they can just follow those rather than their own confused, internal sense.

What does the conservative movement teach about gender? Well, there are 2 and only 2 genders. Gender is based on genitals, of course.
Those 2 are boys and girls.
Boys swagger and control girls and use violence when they feel like it, as is the right of males.
Girls submit to male authority, express loyalty to their men and bear children.

Anyone who doesn't sign on to this interpretation of gender is a liberal or a communist or an unpatriotic terrorist or a homosexual. Or Ann Coulter, the transexual polemicist of the right wing. Obviously.
