Astronomers size up brown dwarfs
MADISON, Wis., March 15 (UPI) -- Astronomers say the discovery of two brown dwarf stars in mutual orbit has enabled them to weigh and measure the radius of brown dwarfs for the first time.
Probing the Orion Nebula, a team of astronomers from Vanderbilt University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Space Telescope Science Institute discovered the dwarf stars.
Brown dwarfs are failed stars that fall somewhere between the smallest stars and the largest planets on the spectrum of heavenly objects. They have always been viewed as a critical link in the understanding of how stars and planets form.
