Lockheed Martin prepares bid to replace military Humvee

There are 170,000 Humvees deployed by U.S. military forces around the world. Hasse expects the contract to be valued at several billion dollars.

Hesse said that several companies probably will compete for the Humvee contract, and the military will eventually narrow the candidates to two for a final assessment and award. She said the two finalists could be designated by December 2007 or January 2008.

Earlier this year, Lockheed Martin was awarded a $9 million contract to build a demonstration vehicle for the Army's future truck needs. The company said the lesson learned in the truck project will help refine the requirements for the new generation of Humvees.
