The Dead Zone

The Dead Zone is a vast expanse of water near the northern Gulf shore that becomes depleted in oxygen from spring to early autumn each year, creating a biological dead zone in which fish and other marine creatures cannot survive.

The Dead Zone is caused by excessive amounts of plant nutrients -- primarily nitrate fertilizers -- that run off agricultural land and into the Mississippi River.
