Many nursing homes are not hurricane-ready
We have cause for deep concern here in South Louisiana. Now, well into the 2006 hurricane season, with the horrors of last year's assaults fresh in mind, too many nursing homes are not ready. At last report, less than a third of the 72 homes recently surveyed in South Louisiana have workable plans to evacuate residents. Of some 6,652 elderly and disabled people, two-thirds of the homes that house them have no tested plan to evacuate or shelter them.
