Peabody wants to open two new Illinois coal mines

MARISSA, Ill. The world's largest publicly traded coal producer wants to open two new southern Illinois mines, taking advantage of surging demand for Illinois coal.
Peabody Energy has asked the Illinois Office of Mines and Minerals for permission to operate two surface mines in northeast Randolph County, about an hour's drive from St. Louis.

Peabody says development would take several years and is contingent on getting the permits, as well as Peabody's ability to secure long-term contracts with customers.
