Sugar maples are the most economically valuable tree species in the eastern United States -- producing syrup, high-priced lumber and fall foliage, which attracts tourism. Researchers have concluded that acid rain -- an environmental consequence of driving cars and running factories -- has altered the soils to reduce dramatically the growth of sugar maples.
