New Bush Apppointee/ Kempthorne Factsheet
Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne is President Bush's nominee to replace Gale Norton as Secretary of the Interior. The Interior Department manages more than 500 million acres of land, one-fifth of the entire country, including national parks, wildlife refuges and wilderness areas. It also supervises American Indian programs.
Prior to his election as Idaho's governor, Kempthorne served one term as U.S. Senator chairing the Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Water. Whether serving as a Senator or Governor, his conservation record is bleak. The League of Conservation Voters gave him a one percent lifetime rating for his lack of support for environmental protection.
